Sarah MacLagan Wins Precision and Tamara Hicks Wins Sporter Air Rifle Championships at 2012 Camp Perry Open 3x20

CAMP PERRY, OHIO – Sarah MacLagan, 17, of Rehoboth, Massachusetts, won the 2012 Camp Perry Open 3x20 championship in the precision air rifle category with an aggregate score of 688.4. The junior-only three-position match, part of a two-discipline event which also includes a two-day 60 X2 international standing match of juniors and open class, was held at the CMP North Marksmanship Center 13-15 January.

Sarah MacLagan, of Rehoboth, Massachusetts, won the 2012 Camp Perry Open 3x20 championship in the precision air rifle category with an aggregate score of 688.4. She fired a qualification score of 588 and topped it off with a 100.4 final to lead all juniors.

MacKenzie Martin, 14, of Fairhaven, Massachusetts, who shot a 100.7 final on a qualification score of 586, placed second with an aggregate score of 686.7. Sonya May, 17, of Rockland, Massachusetts, placed third, just two-tenths behind Martin with a total score of 686.5.

Sixth-place finisher, Keri Marlin, 17, of Shelbyville, Kentucky, fired the high final of the match (101.8).

MacLagan and Martin, Taunton (Massachusetts) teammates, fired a competitive final with MacLagan leading off with a perfect 10.9. Martin answered with a 10.6, but MacLagan refused to yield and held onto most of her two-point qualification lead through the final, finishing 1.7 points ahead.

Tamara Hicks, of Kenton, Ohio, won the sporter air rifle championship with an aggregate score of 630.8.

In sporter competition, Tamara Hicks, 18, of Kenton, Ohio, defeated Gustavo Caltzontzin, 17, of Aurora, Illinois, by 1.1 points to win the championship. Both shooters came back from shooting sixes during the final and Hicks maintained her narrow one-point advantage to clinch the victory. Hicks entered the final with 544 and Caltzontzin followed at 543. She led off the final with a 10 and finished with a 10.3. Both shooters shot 86 in the final.

Iran Rodriguez, 15, of Zion, Illinois, placed third with an aggregate score of 624.9. She fired the high final with an 89.9.

The Taunton Marksmanship Unit precision air rifle team of Massachusetts set a new national record in club team competition by firing an aggregate score of 2344, surpassing the former record set by Palmyra Green of Pennsylvania in June 2011. Team members, from left to right, are MacKenzie Martin, Zach Connell, Sonya May and Sarah MacLagan. TMU swept the top three individual podium places (MacLagan, Martin and May) in the match.

In precision team competition, Taunton (MA) Marksmanship Unit captured first place with a team aggregate of 2344. Taunton is comprised of MacLagan, May, Martin and Zachary Connell, 18, of Whitman, Massachusetts. Second place went to Alexandria (PA) Junior Rifle (2300) and was led by Adam Wheland, 17, of Williamsburg, Pennsylvania. Wheland was joined by brother Chad, 18, Ariana Grabowski, 16, of Altoona, and Mary Sloan, 16, of Huntingdon. Third place went to Massachusetts Rifle Juniors (2286), comprised of sisters Alexis and Olivia Nardone, 17, of Winchester, Verne Conant, Jr., 15, of Billerica, and Nick Frenzo, 16, of Reading.

Third place went to Central Crossing (OH) (2056), which was made up of shooters Eric Bohanan, 17, of Grove City, Rebekah Slane, 15 of Galloway, Daylin Vansteenburg, 14, of Grove City, and Nathan Householder, 18, of Grove City.
