ANNISTON, ALABAMA & CAMP PERRY, OHIO – It was a tale of two come-from-behind victories for Maya Arredondo and Mikaelah Atchley who won the individual precision and sporter air rifle categories, respectively, at the 2011 Army JROTC Service Championships.
It was also a tale of two cities as air rifle shooters fired the same course of fire at roughly the same time, but 720 miles apart at twin CMP Marksmanship Centers in the north and south. The distance was an even larger factor for the winning precision air rifle team which came from Stuttgart, Germany.
Though the matches were held concurrently, individual scores from each venue were recorded separately. Individuals at each location were awarded gold, silver and bronze awards. The awarding of Excellence In Competition points and invitations to the National JROTC Championship in March, however; were compiled from results at both sites.

Maya Arredondo entered the championship final trailing by one point. She made the most of her opportunity and won the precision air rifle title by 1.6 points overall.

In Anniston, Arredondo, 18, of Siegel High School, Tennessee, entered the final on 19 February one point behind the leader Allie Carlson, 17, of Alexander M. Patch American High School, in Stuttgart, Germany. Patch is a high school for students who are primarily the dependents of American soldiers based in Germany.

The first shot fired in the precision final carried the most weight as Arredondo opened with a 10.7 to Carlson’s 9.1. Though Carlson battled valiantly – closing to within .9 of a point on the ninth shot – she couldn’t make up the difference and Arredondo prevailed to win the precision air rifle championship, 1265.2 to 1263.6.
Kevin Cruz, 18, of Del Valle High School, Texas, placed third with an aggregate score of 1261.8.

Joseph Munder, 17, of Marmion Academy, Illinois, posted a 1249.1 aggregate score to win the Camp Perry precision air rifle gold medal. Maya Arredondo won the overall precision service championship in Anniston.

At Camp Perry, the precision air rifle crown went to Joseph Munder, 17, of Marmion Academy, Illinois, who posted a 1249.1 aggregate score, topping Amanda Powers, 18, of Spanish Springs High School, Nevada (1244.9) and Edward Malnar, 17, also of Marmion Academy (1244.3).

Mikaelah Atchley, firing at the Anniston center, came from three points down to win the final and overall championship in the Army JROTC sporter rifle class.

In sporter air rifle at Anniston, Mikaelah Atchley, 18, of Daleville High School, Alabama, came from three points down to win the final and championship with an aggregate score of 1212.9. Similar to the events of the precision match, Tessa Howald, 17, of Ozark High School, Missouri, who had a difficult time overcoming a string of 10s by Atchley in the early going, lost the lead and finished with a 1210.6 aggregate.
Daniel Holden, 16, of Killeen High School, Texas, picked up the third place award with an aggregate of 1202.4.

In the sporter air rifle competition at Camp Perry, Derrick Brown, 17, of Pelion High School, South Carolina (1153.5) topped Scott Miller, 17, also of Pelion High (1150.8) and Jeong Yong Choi, 18, of the Missouri Military Academy (1143.4).

In precision air rifle team competition, which was ranked between the Anniston and Camp Perry marksmanship centers, Patch High School of Stuttgart, Germany, placed first at Anniston and first overall in precision air rifle.

In precision air rifle team competition, which included both the north and south marksmanship centers, Patch High School placed first at Anniston and first overall in precision air rifle. Patch won in a center-shot tiebreaker over Del Valle High School, Texas, with an aggregate score of 4589 with 240 center shots. Del Valle, also competing in the Anniston center, fired a 4589-230 for second overall and second at Anniston.
Firing members for Patch are Allie Carlson, Chaz Gillespie, Mercedes Romih and Addison Flynn. Del Valle High School’s team is comprised of Kevin Cruz, Leslie Gallo, Jasmine Juarez and Jose Arras.

At Anniston, Killeen Texas High School placed third with an aggregate score of 4276. Team members include Daniel Holden, Joseph Blaylock, Nicko Noble and Travis Snow.

The top Camp Perry sporter teams were Pelion High School, South Carolina (6th overall - 4229), St. Thomas Academy, Minnesota (10th overall - 4134), and Simon Sanchez High School, Guam (13th - 4096).
Pelion’s squad is Derrick Brown, Scott Miller, Justin Taylor and Clint Alama. St. Thomas Academy’s team is comprised of Spencer Loufek, Charles Nordstrom, Connor Ahern and Chase Harley. Simon Sanchez’s roster is Annette Mendiola, Joseph Chargualaf, Edwin Cantara and Anthony Lukeala.
