CMP Board of Directors Approves Development of New Outdoor Marksmanship Park Near Talladega
By Steve Cooper, CMP Marketing Manager
|
ANNISTON, AL – The Board for the Promotion of Rifle Practice and Firearms Safety, known as the Civilian Marksmanship Program (CMP), has approved the development of the CMP Talladega Marksmanship Park in Talladega County, Alabama, located a few miles south of the Talladega Speedway. The action was taken at a regularly scheduled meeting of the board last week.
“We are truly excited about developing a new facility where the CMP will geographically expand its mission of teaching respect for firearms, promoting gun safety and marksmanship principles,” said Mark Johnson, Deputy Chief Operating Officer of the CMP”.
The CMP acquired a 500 acre parcel in 2012 with the vision of building a state-of-the-art outdoor marksmanship facility that could be used for a variety of firearms safety and marksmanship training and competitive purposes. The park will be developed in several stages, and when complete, will include a 50 firing point, 600-yard rifle range, and multiple-bay pistol and shotgun ranges.
The new facility will be open for daily use and will provide firearms safety and marksmanship classes for a broad spectrum of participants, with an emphasis on youth. CMP will also host several major regional and national marksmanship competitions at the new facility annually.
The CMP currently operates state-of-the-art indoor air rifle ranges in Anniston, Alabama and Port Clinton, Ohio at Camp Perry, where it hosted both phases of the 2012 Olympic Trials for Airgun. Those qualifying for the U.S. Olympic Team at the CMP Marksmanship Centers represented the nation at the London Games last summer.
Using the same technology, the CMP also operates a traveling airgun competition center with a capacity of 60 firing points designed for use at air rifle and air pistol events significantly distant from the CMP’s permanent Alabama and Ohio locations. The mobile facility can be divided into as many as three multi-target units for simultaneous use anywhere in the U.S.
CMP also conducts the National Trophy Matches at Camp Perry, Ohio in which over 5,000 competitors participate annually and regional games events in eastern, central and western states.
Preliminary work has begun on the Talladega site with expected completion of the marksmanship park sometime in 2014. For additional information contact Mark Johnson at
mjohnson@thecmp.org.
