I attended the Houston Gun Collectors January Show, and truthfully, the CMP display was the high point of the show for me. I'm still trying to decide about buying a Greek Collector Grade M-1 rifle (I have too many Garands already), but when all is said and done, I think the decision to take the CMP to such major gun shows is a real winner.

Top Army JROTC Teams Qualify for Nationals

The CMP and its volunteers recently finished scoring the flood of targets sent in as part of the Army JROTC postal qualifying match that determined which Army JROTC teams will attend the National JROTC Air Rifle Championship held later this month at Ft. Benning, Georgia. There, the Army teams will compete with the best teams in the country, both sporter and precision air rifle, from both the Navy and Marine Corps JROTC programs.
In the precision class, Fitzgerald High School, Fitzgerald, Georgia earned top honors with their score of 1160. Central Catholic High School from San Antonio, Texas placed second with their score of 1143 and the team representing Würzburg American High School in Würzburg, Germany earned third place. Also invited to attend the National Championship competition were the following individuals who qualified on an at-large basis (highest scoring competitors not on a qualifying team): Kaitlin Chaffin and Robert Home (Siegel High School, Tennessee), Amber Criss (Walla Walla High School, Washington), Michael Dickinson (Carroll High School, Alabama), Victoria Scott (Canon City High School, Colorado) and Danielle Synnett (Hiram High School, Georgia).

In the sporter rifle category, first place team honors went to Franklin Parish High School in Louisiana. A close second place was Ripley High School in Tennessee and third was taken by Bogalusa High School in Louisiana. The top individual at-large sporter competitors were: Michael Roosa (Sarasota Military Academy, Florida), Rustin Ault and Charles Bittinger (Preston High School, West Virginia), Jeff Parrot (Richland High School, Texas), Vincent Stock (Central Catholic High School, Texas) and Ryan Schneider (Buckhorn High School, Alabama). Top Navy Postal Qualifying Teams Go to Navy Championships
The Navy JROTC Command does things a little differently than the Army when it comes to its rifle competitions. The top teams and individuals from their postal qualifying match are invited to the Navy JROTC Air Rifle Championship, a shoulder-to-shoulder match that will take place at Fort Benning, Georgia, just ahead of the National JROTC Championship. Winners there will advance to represent the Navy JROTC program at the JROTC Nationals. This year’s top three teams in the precision category in the 2005 Secretary of the Navy JROTC Postal Competition were Henry County High School, Georgia; Luella High School, Georgia and Joshua High School, Texas. The top individual precision shooters in the Navy postal competition were David Garman (Henry County High School, Georgia), Kyle Phillips (Luella High School, Georgia) and Lukas Boling (Bishop Kenny High School, Florida).
In the sporter class, the top three teams were King George High School, Virginia, South Effingham High School, Georgia and West Ashley High School, South Carolina. The top individual sporter air rifle shooters in this year’s postal were Chris Simmons (McDowell High School, North Carolina), Dustin Torres (South Tahoe High School, California) and Ruby Inge (Kennesaw Mountain High School, Georgia). In addition to the top three teams and individuals, the Navy JROTC Command invites a number of other top-scoring teams and individuals in the postal competition to attend the Navy JROTC Championship where they will compete for a chance to advance to the National JROTC Championship. There they will test their skills against the best JROTC competitors representing the Army and Marine Corps. Scores fired in the 2005 National Guard Bureau Junior Air Rifle Postal competition determine the teams that will be invited to compete in the NGB National Junior Air Rifle Tournament at Bowling Green, Kentucky on 27-30 June. This championship, which is one of the major national junior air rifle championships sanctioned by the National Three-Position Air Rifle Council, is open to the top ten teams in the sporter three-position and precision air rifle standing events in the NGB Postal. Invitations are being sent to these teams during the week of 11-15 April.
In the NGB Postal precision category, the team representing the DuBois Rifle and Pistol Club, Pennsylvania earned top honors. In a close contest for second, the Spokane Junior Rifle Club, Washington, edged the Palmyra Junior Rifle Team, Pennsylvania. Of the top individuals in precision, only one was a member of one of the top three teams. The highest scoring individual shooter was Ashley Jackson (SCSA Ashland Eagles, Ohio). Second place was taken by Christine Costello (Rio Salado Sportsman’s Club, Arizona). Third place honors were earned by Leslie Angeli (Palmyra Junior Rifle Team, Pennsylvania). The Palmyra team is the defending precision standing team champion from the 2004 NGB Tournament.

| The Homestead 4-H Shooting Club from Nebraska was the top scoring sporter team in the 2005 NGB Postal. The Homestead club’s sporter team won the 2004 NGB National Tournament.

The sporter competition saw some familiar names topping the leader board. In first place overall was the Homestead 4H Shooting Club, Nebraska team and in second place overall was the Bogalusa High School, Louisiana team. Rounding out the top three teams in sporter was the team from Ripley High School, Tennessee. Shooters from these three teams owned the top spots on the individual results list, as well. Michaela Jochum (Homestead 4H Shooting Club, Nebraska) earned the top position, while Jeremy Rhoads (Ripley High School, Tennessee) occupied the second place spot with Charles Henley (Bogalusa High School, Louisiana) placing third.
