Regarding the latest update, outstanding work again by the whole CMP crew! New or improved programs, expanded scholarships, new or improved facilities, new rifle and accessory offerings and the super relationships CMP has developed with the ONG and NRA leadership are shining examples of what can be done when one's heart is in the program. You all should be justifiably proud of how the program has progressed into its second century. Somewhere President Teddy Roosevelt has a big grin and is saying a hearty Bully for the CMP! Wow! Please forward my thanks to everyone responsible for all the improvements I just read about at Camp Perry. Recent years have included quite a few impressive improvements and it looks like there are more this year. The Air Gun range, bath house at RV Park, Bataan Armory remodel, etc are all great. Great article written on physical conditioning in the latest TFS. I was one of likely many who had asked about the type of conditioning recommended for serious shooters. Sgt. Craig did a great job on describing the routines. Now it’s my turn to put it to work.

The September-07 on line shooting tips by SSG Tobie Tomlinson, USAMU Service Rifle Team Member, is a great article. I have reproduced 15 copies of it to hand out and discuss to our “newbie” first year air rifle shooters on our high school JROTC Air Rifle Team. Come to think about it believe I’ll hand out a copy to my advance shooters as well. His explanations are simple to understand but rich in detail. Coupled with the sight pictures this article will go a long way towards helping all our JROTC shooters obtain better sight patterns. Keep up the great work. AND…..keep the articles like this coming.

2009 Dixie Challenge

On 14 February 2009 the Civilian Marksmanship Program played host to the Dixie Challenge. This 3x20 three-position air rifle competition took place at the new CMP Competition Center-South in Anniston, Alabama, which features an 80-point air rifle range. The event drew 65 shooters and a total of 10 junior teams. In all four states were represented in the match.

The Dixie Challenge began life as the Peach Challenge 16 years ago in Clanton, Alabama. The name eventually changed and the match moved to the Pelham Armory in Pelham, Alabama and is sponsored by the Shelby County Shooting Sports Association. For the 2009 Dixie Challenge the match sponsors decided to take advantage of the new CMP facility, a move that allowed the event to be condensed from two days to one.
The match was split into Sporter and Precision Classes, and there were great scores shot in each class. In the Sporter Class, West Ashley High School NJROTC from Charleston, South Carolina was the top team of the day with a 2073. Firing team members were Carrie Garvin, 544, Kristin Metts, 518, Charles Munzenmaier, 506 and Cydney Horne, 505. Garvin was also top individual sporter competitor in the match, adding a 85.6 final to finish with a 629.6.
In the Precision Class, Luella High School from Locust Grove, Georgia was the top team with a 2286. Firing team members were Jacob Brown, 581, Jackson Bailey, 572, Patrick Nelms, 568 and Wesley White, 565. The contest for the top precision individual was the closest contest of the day, coming down to one-tenth of a point in the final to determine the winner. Melissa Quartarone of Parkview High School in Stone Mountain, Georgia just edged out Ian Young of Columbus, Georgia, 686.6 to 686.5 to claim first.
