Regarding the latest update, outstanding work again by the whole CMP crew! New or improved programs, expanded scholarships, new or improved facilities, new rifle and accessory offerings and the super relationships CMP has developed with the ONG and NRA leadership are shining examples of what can be done when one's heart is in the program. You all should be justifiably proud of how the program has progressed into its second century. Somewhere President Teddy Roosevelt has a big grin and is saying a hearty Bully for the CMP! Regards, LTC John F., USAR ret'd
I have truly enjoyed your Shooting Tips site. Even as a 25 yr veteran police sniper/high power shooter,I still find interesting, and useful tips from the successful younger folks coming up through the military, and law enforcement. Keep up the good work! Det.Tim R.
Wow! Please forward my thanks to everyone responsible for all the improvements I just read about at Camp Perry. Recent years have included quite a few impressive improvements and it looks like there are more this year. The Air Gun range, bath house at RV Park, Bataan Armory remodel, etc are all great. Just letting you know how much we (competitors) appreciate all the work.
Sincerely...
Grayson P.
CMP Shooters' News is one of my favorite email news publications. Information packed, talented authors, timely subjects, and all around well done. What a great service you are providing to the shooting community. Just wanted to say thanks and Merry Christmas. Newt E.
I enjoy and look forward to TFS and the excellent articles that are published on a regular basis. Please keep this publication coming and keep the CMP active. Don M.
One of the members at Snipers Hide pointed out the newsletter and the High Power Tips articles by the USAMU team.
Darn you! I was up until 1:00 AM last night reading all of the articles. Great newsletter and really great USAMU articles.
Thanks,
Michael E.
Great article written on physical conditioning in the latest TFS. I was one of likely many who had asked about the type of conditioning recommended for serious shooters. Sgt. Craig did a great job on describing the routines. Now it’s my turn to put it to work.
Thanks to you, Sgt. Craig and other contributors who share best practices of shooting excellence.
Sincerely,
Keith H.
I use these articles in our high power clinics and have found them very helpful for both new shooters and reinforcement of the basics for the more experienced.
Thanks, Gary M.
Thanks for the great articles on the Carbine, Springfield, Garand matches. All the articles are interesting, but the Carbine, Springfield & Garand are my favorites.

The September-07 on line shooting tips by SSG Tobie Tomlinson, USAMU Service Rifle Team Member, is a great article. I have reproduced 15 copies of it to hand out and discuss to our “newbie” first year air rifle shooters on our high school JROTC Air Rifle Team. Come to think about it believe I’ll hand out a copy to my advance shooters as well. His explanations are simple to understand but rich in detail. Coupled with the sight pictures this article will go a long way towards helping all our JROTC shooters obtain better sight patterns. Keep up the great work. AND…..keep the articles like this coming.

Navy Wraps-Up 2009 JROTC Service Championships at Camp Perry

Written by Sommer Wood, CMP Program Manager

The last of the 2009 JROTC Air Rifle Service Championships concluded on 27-28 February at Camp Perry, Ohio when the Civilian Marksmanship Program played host to the best Navy JROTC shooters from all over the country. This was the third weekend in a row that a major junior championship was held in the CMP’s new Camp Perry Marksmanship Center, with its 80-firing point electronic target equipped air gun range.

With the use of CMP's live score tracking on the Internet, coaches and parents were able to use their laptops on the range to track multiple shooters at the same time. In all, there were over 15,000 web hits on the 2009 Navy JROTC Air Rifle Championship results page during the two days of competition.

This marked the second stage of competition for the high school age cadets who qualified for this competition. These shooters had to qualify from the initial field of 2,885 Navy Cadets from 372 Units who participated in the Navy’s JROTC postal competition last fall. From that initial group, only 199 Cadets advanced to the 2009 Navy JROTC Air Rifle Championship. The qualifiers represented Navy Units from all across the Continental USA and Alaska. Qualifying to compete in the JROTC Championships was a significant accomplishment for all of the Cadets who competed at Camp Perry.

Shooting in the JROTC Championships provided the unique opportunity for many of the athletes to use electronic targets for the first time. These systems provide instant scoring. The CMP’s Competitor Tracker Internet-based results system also enabled the CMP to post live, continually updated results on its website. But the new target system at the Camp Perry range now takes the concept of live results on the Internet to an even higher level that goes far beyond just posting scores on the web. For the first time anywhere, not only the scores, but also live target images of the shooters in the JROTC Championships were displayed on the Internet. This meant that anyone anywhere in the world could see the exact same display screen that competitors on the range see to follow shooters’ progress live, shot-by-shot, from their personal computers. Several schools took advantage of this new technology and set-up projection screens in classrooms so that students could watch their classmates compete. Coaches and parents were also pulling out their laptops on the range so they could track multiple shooters at the same time. In all, there were over 15,000 web hits on the 2009 Navy JROTC Air Rifle Championship results page during the two days of competition.

In the Precision class, 2008 National JROTC Precision Team Champion, Union Grove HS from McDonough, Georgia set a Navy team National Record with a 2321 on the first day. The team ended with a 4634 total and a 37-point victory over the second place Luella High School Team.

The competition consisted of two days of three-position 3x20 air rifle competition. Competing cadets were divided into Sporter and Precision rifle classes. Both team and individual champions were honored on the basis of the total aggregate score from the two days. To determine the Individual Champions, the top eight shooters from the two-day competition in each rifle class shot a 10-shot final on Saturday that was added to their aggregate score to determine the winners in each class.

Just as in the previous two weekends, there were several impressive performances shot in the Navy JROTC Championship, including six new Navy JROTC National Records. In the Precision class, 2008 National JROTC Precision Team Champion, Union Grove HS from McDonough, Georgia set a Navy team National Record with a 2321 on the first day. The team ended with a 4634 total and a 37-point victory over the second place Luella High School Team. Ironically, the Union Grove alternate, Kayla Dorsey, shot a 584 on the first day and again on the second day to total 1168, the second highest precision aggregate in the match. Unfortunately since Dorsey was not selected for the four-person scoring team her score counted only in the team alternates competition and did not count towards the team total. The firing team members for Union Grove HS were Abigail Casey, 1170, Steven Frazier, 1165, Tiffani Potter, 1151 and Juli Yoder, 1148. The team was coached by SCPO Ralph Varnadoe.

The top Precision Individual shooter of the weekend was Matthew Martin of Chugiak HS, who traveled all the way from Anchorage, Alaska to compete. Martin entered the final in second place, 2-points behind Abigail Casey of Union Grove. A strong 101.0 final gave Martin the edge he needed to move into first to claim the championship with a 1269.0 aggregate score. Casey finished second with a 1264.9 and Jacob Brown of Luella HS in Locust Grove, Georgia finished third with a 1264.5.

Yvonne Swiontek from Zion-Benton HS was the Navy Sporter Class National Champion.

King George HS of King George, Virginia won the Sporter Team Championship. Firing team members Samuel Green, 1095, Elizabeth Hampton, 1073, Matthew Reed, 1063 and Kimberly Heitmeyer, 1032, combined for a team total 4263. The team was coached by Fred Duckworth. The top individuals were Yvonne Swiontek of Zion Benton HS in Zion, Illinois who finished first with an 1195.5. Second went to Samuel Green of King George who shot an 1190.1. Shayna Thompson of Oviedo HS from Oviedo, Florida claimed third with an 1183.3.
