In reference to your article "Sniper School Comes To Iraq", the 173rd Airborne Brigade operated a sniper school in Bihn Dihn Province, Viet Nam, as late as 1970.

We received several comments, like the one above, regarding the Sniper story that we posted. We have revised it thanks to your comments.
Enjoy it very much. Especially happy to hear about the improvements at Camp Perry. They are long over due.

Thank you for some good news. The pictures really spice it up. I'm so happy to see these improvements. It really does show commitment to the matches. It was always so depressing to see things crumbling and the old mess hall laying in ruins. This is great.
See you at the matches,
RW
An excellent article about taking sniper training to Iraq. Thank you for sending
me this information.
At the end of our regular smallbore season (September - March), we keep the doors open for Scouts through the month of April. This works out great because we have all the equipment necessary for the Scouts (rifles, ammunition, shooting mats, coaches and of course facilities). Basically, all the Scouts have to do is show up. The also works as a good recruiter program to get kids involved in the our marksmanship program and the shooting sports. I encourage other clubs to keep the doors open at the end of the season and help the Scouts out.

The National Guard Marksmanship Training Unit hosted the 45th Annual Interservice Pistol Championship at Camp Robinson, Arkansas on 14-17 June 2004. Staff Sergeant James Henderson, U.S. Army Reserves, shot well throughout the long competition to achieve a new match record of 3536-184X in the Individual Championship Grand Aggregate. The U.S. Army Blue Team was the leading team; they won three of the four team events and the Overall Team Aggregate.
Sixty-three competitors representing the Air Force, All-National Guard, Army, Army Reserves, Marine Corps, Marine Corps Reserves, Navy and Navy Reserves participated in the competitions that included a 1800-point warm-up aggregate, a 2700 three-gun aggregate, a 90-shot service pistol aggregate and a 30-shot service pistol EIC match.

The individual competition featured a series of close contests between SSG Henderson, U.S. Army Reserves, from Festus, Missouri and Gunnery Sergeant Brian Zins, USMC, from Quantico, Virginia. Zins is the defending National Pistol Champion and won the National Trophy Individual Match during the 2003 Nationals. Henderson won the President’s and National Trophy Individual Matches and fired the high score in the National Trophy Team Match in the 2002 Nationals. Henderson finished this competition with the most wins. He took the .22 Caliber Championship, the .45 Caliber Championship and the Service Pistol Championship. He was second in the Center Fire Championship that Zins won. Zins was second in the other three championships.
Henderson ended with a 2667-148X Three-Gun Aggregate and his match record 3536-184X Individual Championship Aggregate. That record placed him in the distinguished company of having bettered scores fired by past Interservice winners like Bill Blankenship, Ralph Thompson, Herschel Anderson, Don Hamilton, Brian Zins and Steve Reiter who set the previous match record of 3533-177X in 1988.

In the team events, the Army won the .22 Caliber Team Match, the Center Fire Team Match and the Service Pistol Team Match to take the Overall Team Aggregate. The Army Blue Team won the Service Pistol Team Match with a 1132-30X and the overall team title with a 4634-177X total. Army team members were SFC Roger Jacobson, Staff Sergeant Thomas Rose, Sergeant Adam Sokolowski and Specialist Sean Watson. The USMC Scarlet Team won the fourth team event, the .45 Caliber Team Match.
The 45th Interservice Pistol Championship concluded with an awards banquet where Gary Anderson, Director of Civilian Marksmanship, was the guest speaker. Awards were presented by Anderson and Colonel Lance Tharel, Commander of the National Guard Marksmanship Training Center.
Most of the service teams that fired in the competitions at Camp Robinson now have one more match, the Canton, Ohio Pistol Regional, before they report to Camp Perry to serve as instructors and coaches at the Pistol Small Arms Firing School and to begin the National Pistol Matches. The pistol nationals will culminate with the National Trophy Pistol Matches on Sunday, 18 July, where the same military shooters and many top civilian pistol shooters will compete for the President’s Trophy, the Custer Trophy that goes to the Pistol National Trophy Individual Match winner, and the Gold Cup Trophy that goes to the service pistol team that wins the National Trophy Pistol Team Match.

Ten teams representing the Air Force, All-National Guard, Army, Army Reserves, Marine Corps, Marine Corps Reserves, Navy and Navy Reserves stepped to the line on the last day of the Interservice Pistol Championship to compete in the service pistol team championship. The Army Pistol Team won the match. |
