In a community as large as the competition shooter family that comes to the National Matches at Camp Perry every year, tragedies that strike one of their members are always hard to take. On Wednesday, July 21st, Ken Saucier, a pistol shooter, Seattle Police Officer and father, died in a single-car accident in Northern Idaho. Mr. Saucier was en route home to Seattle after attending the 2004 National Pistol Matches at Camp Perry.
Mr. Saucier was a member of the Washington State Gold Pistol Team that earned the honor of being the second place civilian team in the National Trophy Pistol Team Match. Saucier made the President’s 100 in 2003. He was a Distinguished Pistol Shot, having earned his Distinguished badge during the 2000 National Matches. This year he again competed in the President’s Pistol Match and the National Trophy Individual Match and was a firing member of the Washington Gold Team in the National Trophy Pistol Team Match.
Ken Saucier was a police officer in the City of Seattle, Washington. He was the first African-American President of the Seattle Police Officers Guild, a union for police officers in that city. He was recognized an outstanding officer and in his work as the President of the Police Officers Guild, earned a reputation for his effective dedication to the needs of his fellow officers.

Saucier and another member of the Washington Gold Pistol Team, Wesley Lorenz, were traveling through Idaho on their way home from the National Matches. Around 3:50 a.m. on Interstate 90 on Wednesday, July 21st, the pickup Mr. Saucier was driving drifted off the left shoulder. Apparently, Mr. Saucier overcorrected and rolled the vehicle. He died at the scene. Lorenz was treated for minor injuries at a nearby hospital and released.
Ken Saucier is survived by his wife of nearly 18 years, Suzanne, and their three daughters, Rebecca, Regina and Renee. The CMP extends its sincere sympathy and condolences to Ken Saucier’s family, his fellow police officers and all of the members of the shooting community who knew and respected him. |
