The 2006 edition of the Daisy Air Rifle Championship featured some impressive new Three-Position Air Rifle National Records. 16-year-old Michaela Jochum from Beatrice, Nebraska, already owns several records, but may have fired her most impressive records yet during this year’s Daisy championship. On the first day of competition, she shattered her own 20-shot standing record of 185 with an unbelievable sporter score of 192. She finished the day with a 573 three-position total to break her old open record of 571. With two days of dominating performances, Jochum went on to win the sporter class individual competition by 31 points and lead her Homestead 4-H Club team to victory in the sporter class team championship.

| 14-year-old ReAnn Wilson, Manhattan, Montana, tied an Age Group III national record with a 195 standing score. |
14-year-old ReAnn Wilson from Manhattan, Montana tied an age group III (14 & under) record in the precision class standing competition on the first day when she fired a 195. Her first day three-position total of 583 led all competitors. Wilson dropped to a 569 on the second day, but made the final and finished in 5th place overall in the precision class.
In the second day of precision class competition, Danielle Poteete from Sparks, Nevada took the lead going into the final with a 585. Poteete started the final with a scant two-point lead over Keeley Stankey of Richfield, Minnesota and a three-point lead over Jace Bures of Odell, Nebraska. Stankey and Bures are both previous winners in national sporter class championships and are now making the transition to the precision class.

There were several lead changes in an exciting final. Stankey fired an excellent 97 score in the final to overtake Poteete and win by four points. Poteete was second and Bures’ teammate Sara Broeker from Seward, Nebraska, passed him to take third by one point. Bures, Broeker, Clint Sejkora and Sheena Malloch, all of whom were firing on championship sporter teams in 2005, won the precision class team championship while representing the Homestead 4-H Shooting Club.
In the sporter class competition, Lauren Strebel from Pottstown, Pennsylvania, fired an excellent 555 on the first day, but with Jochum’s 573 national record score, she was already 18 points down. On the second day Strebel fired a second best 550 behind Jochum’s 565. With a 33-point lead, the final was no contest and Jochum ended with a two-day total of 1225, the highest ever for a two-day three-position aggregate with a final. Strebel, who won the sporter class championship at the 2006 JROTC Nationals, was second at 1194. Wren Burnett from Bowling Green, Kentucky won a sudden-death tie-breaker after the final with Simone Riford from Kaneohe, Hawaii. The two were tied after the final; Burnett fired a 10, Riford a nine.

A Homestead 4-H Team that included Jochum and three new shooters also won the sporter class team championship. Other team members were Cole Bures, Alyssa Wolken and Alex Niedfeldt.
The Daisy Air Rifle Championship traces its history to the 1970s when it was the only shoulder-to-should national air gun competition for juniors. It played a vital role in building what is available today as a comprehensive national three-position air rifle program. The 2006 Championship took place at Bowling Green, Kentucky, just ahead of the National Junior Olympic Three-Position Air Rifle Championship. Support in conducting this competition was provided by USA Shooting and the CMP.
