Regarding the latest update, outstanding work again by the whole CMP crew! New or improved programs, expanded scholarships, new or improved facilities, new rifle and accessory offerings and the super relationships CMP has developed with the ONG and NRA leadership are shining examples of what can be done when one's heart is in the program. You all should be justifiably proud of how the program has progressed into its second century. Somewhere President Teddy Roosevelt has a big grin and is saying a hearty Bully for the CMP! I have truly enjoyed your Shooting Tips site. Even as a 25 yr veteran police sniper/high power shooter,I still find interesting, and useful tips from the successful younger folks coming up through the military, and law enforcement. Keep up the good work! Det.Tim R.
Wow! Please forward my thanks to everyone responsible for all the improvements I just read about at Camp Perry. Recent years have included quite a few impressive improvements and it looks like there are more this year. The Air Gun range, bath house at RV Park, Bataan Armory remodel, etc are all great. Just letting you know how much we (competitors) appreciate all the work.
Sincerely...
Grayson P.
CMP Shooters' News is one of my favorite email news publications. Information packed, talented authors, timely subjects, and all around well done. What a great service you are providing to the shooting community. Just wanted to say thanks and Merry Christmas. Newt E.
I enjoy and look forward to TFS and the excellent articles that are published on a regular basis. Please keep this publication coming and keep the CMP active. Don M.
One of the members at Snipers Hide pointed out the newsletter and the High Power Tips articles by the USAMU team.
Darn you! I was up until 1:00 AM last night reading all of the articles. Great newsletter and really great USAMU articles.
Thanks,
Michael E.
Great article written on physical conditioning in the latest TFS. I was one of likely many who had asked about the type of conditioning recommended for serious shooters. Sgt. Craig did a great job on describing the routines. Now it’s my turn to put it to work.
Thanks to you, Sgt. Craig and other contributors who share best practices of shooting excellence.
Sincerely,
Keith H.
I use these articles in our high power clinics and have found them very helpful for both new shooters and reinforcement of the basics for the more experienced.
Thanks, Gary M.
Thanks for the great articles on the Carbine, Springfield, Garand matches. All the articles are interesting, but the Carbine, Springfield & Garand are my favorites.

The September-07 on line shooting tips by SSG Tobie Tomlinson, USAMU Service Rifle Team Member, is a great article. I have reproduced 15 copies of it to hand out and discuss to our “newbie” first year air rifle shooters on our high school JROTC Air Rifle Team. Come to think about it believe I’ll hand out a copy to my advance shooters as well. His explanations are simple to understand but rich in detail. Coupled with the sight pictures this article will go a long way towards helping all our JROTC shooters obtain better sight patterns. Keep up the great work. AND…..keep the articles like this coming.

JROTC Cadets Invade Sarasota, Florida
For
JROTC Cadet Leadership Camp
And Newly Introduced
Safety & Air Rifle Marksmanship Course

Beginning June 9, 2008 and ending June 12, 2008, JROTC Cadets joined together from five area high schools to attend a JROTC Cadet Leadership Camp (JCLC). Now in its 4th year, JROTC Cadets numbering 120 strong were from Booker H.S., Desoto H.S., River H.S., Sarasota H.S., and new this year Zephyrhills H.S. to participate in their summer camp.

In addition to learning how to rappel, ride the zip line, climb a rock wall, learning self and deep water rescue techniques, how to use mask-fins-and snorkel, earn a Sarasota County Life Guard Certification, and for the very first the cadets were introduced to Safety and Air Rifle Marksmanship.

A 17 point firing range was set up in the cafeteria to introduce JROTC Cadets to Air Rifle Marksmanship.

Establishing a safe and secure indoor rifle range in the same cafeteria where they all would eat their meals proved to be easier than first thought. Approved air rifle range backstops were borrowed from several schools, air rifles loaned, and lead collection procedures established. Hand washing stations were also established for supervised mandatory hand washing prior to all meals. With only three days of shooting to introduce and qualify the cadets who passed their required Safety Exams and Safety Pledges, SGM (Retired) Roger Mitchell, Range Officer and Instructor, determined that the firing line would be made up of 17 active firing points.

CMP Certified Rifle Instructors gave instruction to the Cadets. Many of the Cadets had never held a rifle before.

All items of necessity for air rifle shooting were provided; shooting glasses, shooting mats, pellet holding containers, slings, and tools for minor adjustments and repairs. Safety Officers and Instructors, all CMP Certified, were readily available for instruction, help, and encouragement. As always, safety was the priority.

Cadets were totally awed by their introductions to air rifle marksmanship. Many had never held a rifle in their hands, let alone a competition air rifle. As usual, once taught the proper procedures and safety of this new summer camp course of instruction, they took to the course like ducks to water. Like on the Rappel Tower, some of the Cadets were a bit squeamish. These Cadets were not pressured but allowed to watch and observe. When they saw their “battle buddy” and other Cadets shooting and having a great time, it was not very long before they were begging to get back onto the firing line. After steadily cocking the handle on their air rifle, several of the Cadets were observed to have slightly bigger upper arm muscles at the end of the course. The use of the Clear Barrel Indicator (CBI) fascinated the Cadets and they all mastered the art of inserting their individual CBIs no matter what bright color it was.

A Summer Camp is a great way to introduce Juniors to Rifle Marksmanship.

At the end of the third day of shooting, 77 JROTC Cadets had gone through the course and…..31 Cadets earned the coveted Sharpshooter or Marksman JROTC Qualification Badge to proudly wear on their uniforms.

Lessons learned? A great introduction to the summer camp program, a dynamite way for the schools to recruit new members to their rifle teams, but most importantly a teaching tool for RESPONSIBILITY, TEAM WORK, LISTENING TO DETAILED INSTRUCTION, ESPIRIT de CORPS AND AIR RIFLE SAFETY!
