McHenry Wins Coach of the Year

William E. "Bill" McHenry was recognized as the 2000/2001 Junior Shooting Coach of the Year at the CMP, NRA, USAS National Coaches Conference. McHenry (in blue) is shown here receiving the award from CMP Director Gary Anderson.

Lt. Col. McHenry, 53, who spent 29 years in the military, is a founding coach of the Fort Mill High School shooting team in Fort Mill, South Carolina. He credited his success with his students to a fellow high school rifle coach Paul Davis, who served as McHenry's mentor.

In working with youth, McHenry emphasizes personal integrity, academic performance and marksmanship results. First, he requires his team members to maintain a minimum B average in school. When it comes to discipline, he draws "a clear line," and in his five years as a coach and ROTC instructor, he has built a reputation for making sure his charges follow the rules, both on the field of competition and off it.

McHenry said, "my job as a coach is to help a kid realize his vision."
