USAMU soldiers win Gold Medals, break World Records in Europe

Shooters of the U.S. Army Marksmanship Unit of Fort Benning, Ga., have scored some major victories recently. The following results are some of their accomplishments:

> Shotgun World Cup Finals, Doha, Qatar, Jan. 27 and 28 – USMU shotgun shooter Staff Sgt. Joseph D. Buffa won the Bronze Medal in the Skeet Match.

> Rogaland Open, Stavanger, Norway, Jan. 18 and 19 – International rifle shooter Sgt. Jason A. Parker won two Gold Medals in the Men’s Air Rifle competitions; his scores also beat the current world’s record in both matches. Spc. Grant E. Saylor won the Gold Medals in the two Air Pistol competitions. Spc. Mary K. Elsass received the Bronze Medal in the Women’s Air Rifle match.

> Grand Prix, Pilzen, Czech Republic, Jan. 11 to 13 – Parker won the Gold Medal in the Air Rifle Grand Prix Jan. 12. Parker also took the Silver Medal in the Jan. 13 Air Rifle match out of 35 competitors from 11 countries; he finished just 7/10ths of a point from the Gold Medal.

(Formed in 1956 by President Dwight D. Eisenhower to raise the standards of marksmanship throughout the U.S. Army, the Army Marksmanship Unit has been a part of the U. S. Army Recruiting Command since October 1999. The Marksmanship Unit trains its soldiers to win competitions and enhances combat readiness through train-the-trainer clinics, research and development. The world-class soldier-athletes of the USAMU also promote the Army and assist recruiters in attracting young Americans to enlist in the Army.
