One of the obvious strengths of the CMP junior rifle camp was the hands-on, one-on-one instruction the campers receive from experienced, competition- tested coaches. In fact, helping Head Coach Dr. Dan Durben, (2000 Olympic Coach) with the daily chores were a dedicated group of college level shooters--people like Kevin Simon from Jacksonville State University, Aaron Shader and Lindsey Meagher from the University of Kentucky, Nicole Allaire from West Virginia University, and Annie Goodman from Tennessee Tech.

The one coach who seemed everywhere all at once, however, was 1996 and 2000 Olympian Jayme Dickman. A double gold medalist at the 1998 Pan Am Games, the 24-year-old Dickman came to the CMP's Virginia junior camp to give my knowledge of shooting to the next generation of shooters."

Of course, this camp is only the first of five for Dickman that are scheduled through the summer. And every day is so full that it feels like "you've just shot a big match."

Dickman's day began well before getting to the range at 8:00 am (her first "official" duty is managing the gun room, distributing the equipment to the teens at 7:00 am). Instruction runs from the morning to 8:00 or 9:00 at night. Sometime before midnight, Dickman may still be out setting up targets for the next day or dealing with the myriad problems of running a camp. "It's hard because I want to spread my knowledge as much as I can, and you have 50 kids...they all want to know as much as possible, and the parents and coaches are picking your brains. So all day long you're constantly talking and working and teaching and trying to coach..."

And, yes, when the editor of The First Shot arrives at 10:00 on Friday night, Dickman is the one to find a room for a media representative.

At times, Dickman even acts as a physical trainer. "We take them running, and we take them to the gym and show them exercises to strengthen muscles they use in shooting." Dickman added, "We have to work off all that ice cream they're eating at lunch."
