Sacred Hearts High School girls and Saint Louis High School boys continue to dominate Hawaii High School Athletic Association air riflery. The two schools won the Civilian Marksmanship Program-sponsored Hawaii State High School Boys and Girls State Air Rifle Championships in November. The Hawaii High School Athletic Association (HHSAA) sanctions annual separate state championships for boys and girls teams.

Zig Look, who is also the CMP State Junior Director for the State of Hawaii, coaches both winning teams. Since the HHSAA state championships were established in 1999, Saint Louis, an all-boys’ high school, has won all five state boys trophies and Sacred Hearts, a girls’ high school, has won three of five girls titles. Sacred Hearts was runner-up to Punahou High School in the 2002 championship.

Senior Eric Okamoto became the fourth Saint Louis marksman in five years to win the boy’s individual title. He edged teammate Blake Cuban 541 to 538.

Junior Deana Sin is the third Sacred Hearts shooter to claim the girl’s individual championship. Sin beat teammate senior Shannon Li, the 2001 state champion, 543 to 537.

Waiakea High School finished a strong second in both boys and girls. Warrior boys took third through sixth and eighth places and finished eight points behind Saint Louis, 2086 to 2078, in the team standings. Waiakea girls were 18 points behind Sacred Hearts.

Girls Individual Winners: (L-R) Shannon Li, Deana Sin, Chastity Yamada
In last year's girl’s state championship, Li finished third and Sin fourth. This year, Sin edged Li for the Interscholastic League of Honolulu championship that concluded one week before the state championship and then finished ahead of Li once again in the state championship.

"Deana is a third year shooter with us," coach Look said. "This year she decided to increase her commitment to shooting and it paid off well. Last year she brought back a silver medal in her age category (J2) from the Junior Olympic Nationals in women's air pistol so she has also demonstrated her versatility as a shooter."

"At this time we are fortunate to have a number of developing girls who have a lot of upside potential," Look said. "You never know exactly when any one of them will blossom."

Hawaii state championship competitors fired 20 shots from competition Daisy Air Rifles in each of three positions--prone, standing and kneeling--at targets 10 meters (33 feet) away. Scores were based on their aggregate totals.

Hawaii and Georgia are the only states where the state high school athletic association sanctions a high school air rifle championship. The HHSAA now sanctions championships in 32 sports--more than any other state.
