Parker Wins Open Rifle While Furrer, Peck and Ibarra Lead Juniors in Rifle and 3x20 at 2011 Camp Perry Open

CAMP PERRY, OHIO – SFC Jason Parker, 36, a member of the US Army Marksmanship rifle team, captured the 2011 Camp Perry Open 60-shot precision rifle championship with an aggregate score of 1394.9. He topped national development team member Amy Sowash, 26, of Richmond, Kentucky (1390.6) and West Virginia University’s Bryant Wallizer, 23, of Little Orleans, Maryland (1388.3) in the two-day standing event at the CMP North Marksmanship Center on 15 and 16 January.
SFC Parker qualified with an opening 597 on Saturday and followed with a 592 the next day. He needed his impressive 700.4 Day I aggregate to outlast a determined Sowash who fired a 695.9 to lead all Day II shooters. Parker’s 103.4 and 102.5 finals were enough to ensure a four-point overall victory.
Sowash and Wallizer entered the final with matching 1186 qualifying scores with Sowash ahead on center shots.

Amanda Furrer, 20, of Spokane, Washington, a sophomore member of The Ohio State University and national development teams, led all juniors in the precision rifle event with an aggregate score of 1380.1, topping OSU freshman teammate Amanda Luoma, 18, of Cortland, Ohio (1374.7) and Amos Peck, 17, of Leslie, Michigan (1369.9). Furrer was fifth overall and she fired the high final of the event (104.4) on Day II.

Josh Olson, 31, a member of the USAMU team, won the disabled prone rifle competition with an aggregate of 1402.4. Mike Dickey, 53, finished second with an 1180. Thomas Monto, 68, of Midland, Michigan won the standing disabled competition with an aggregate of 1382.2 and Greg Drown, 50, of Fremont, Ohio followed with an even 1000 aggregate.

Peck is a member of the Michigan State University Rifle and Pistol Club and he also won the Camp Perry Open 3x20 championship on Friday night, 14 January. He outlasted a gutsy performance by 13-year-old MacKenzie Martin, of Fairhaven, Massachusetts who was firing in her first-ever final. She qualified for the final ahead of Peck based on center shots, 40 to 35, each entering with scores of 587 apiece.

The lead changed hands a few times during the final and it was dead-even after four shots at 628.1. Martin edged ahead on the fifth shot by one point and she held the lead during the sixth and seventh shots. An excited Martin said afterward she knew her lead might be in jeopardy when she sailed a shot wide to the eight ring on her eighth shot, falling back four-tenths of a point. Peck closed with a 10.4 and a 10.6 and ended the youthful Martin’s dream of winning – 100.9 to 100.0, and an aggregate of 687.9 to 687.0.

Meredith Carpentier, 18, of Waukegan, Illinois, took third place in the precision 3x20, firing an aggregate of 684.4.

In sporter air rifle, Renz Ibarra, 17, of Beach Park, Illinois, continued his winning ways, placing first with a qualifying score of 550, a final score of 90.5 with an aggregate of 640.5, topping Ashley Brown, 17, of Prince Frederick, Maryland, who fired an aggregate of 634.9. Dawn Bettasso, 18, of Winthrop Harbor, Illinois, took third place with a total score of 627.3.

In precision air rifle 3x20 team shooting, Taunton Wolfpack of Massachusetts won first place with a four-person team aggregate total of 2291. The team is comprised of MacKenzie Martin, Sonya May, 16, of Rockland, Zachary Connell, 17, of Whitman and Jeffrey Caron, 16, of Bridgewater. Winning second place with an aggregate score of 2280 was Michigan #2, fired by Amos Peck, Ethan Cook, 14, of St. Clair, Jason Spaude, 13, of Saginaw and Anne Sullivan, 17, of Grosse Pointe Park. In third place was Massachusetts Rifle with a team total 2267, fired by Olivia, 16, and Alexis Nardone, 16, of Winchester, Verne Conant, 14, of Billerica and Edison Thayer, 17, of Boxford.

In sporter air rifle 3x20 team competition, Zion Benton A Team, Illinois, fired by Renz Ibarra, Dawn Bettasso, Thomas French 18, of Zion, and Heather Melvin, 17, of Zion, took first place honors with a team aggregate score of 2153. In second place was Calvert Team 1, Maryland, fired by Ashley Brown, Rachel Cloud, 16, Michael Trujillo, 16, and Zachary Booth, 14, all of Prince Frederick. Calvert scored a team total of 2068. Third place went to East Aurora Tomcat A, Illinois, with an aggregate score of 2052, fired by Karen Munguia, 17, Jesus Torres, 16, Gustavo Caltzontzin, 16 and Insisiengmay Soureayavongsa, 16, all of Aurora.

In open pistol competition, USAMU SSG Thomas Rose, 35, fired a two-day aggregate of 1348.7 to win first place. He was followed by Army PFC Greg Markowski, 37, with a total aggregate of 1338.3. Third place went to Andrew Traciak, 21, of Mason, Michigan, who fired a total two-day score of 1273.8.
