On February 12th of this year the Winchester Canyon Gun Club, Santa Barbara, California, hosted it's 2nd CMP
Meet since re-affiliating with the Civilian Marksmanship Program. Attending this meet were 13 youth and 6 adults. A spirit of friendship
prevailed as members shook hands and exchanged greetings. Members were happy to see each other after the January '05 meet was postponed due to road closures and severe winter weather.

After saying the Pledge of Allegiance and posting the colors, the meet proceeded with a review of the
day's events. A review of gun safety was given along with an overview of basic marksmanship principles. Targets were placed at the 25 yard berm and youngsters were soon given
commands from the range officer to begin firing. Hits were spotted and called out according to
a clock face. “High at two o’clock!” “In the black, ten o’clock!” Shooters made adjustments and
improved their skills with each shot fired. Once the cease fire command was given, targets were moved out to the 50 yard berm and the process
was repeated.

A fun time was shared by all who attended. Following the morning's shooting activities a Santa Maria style BBQ was held at the
club house. Members discussed the upcoming event to be held March 12th. Future events are also planned including a blue ribbon competition for top marksmen and women.

Editor’s Note:
This Winchester Canyon Gun Club event is an excellent example of the enjoyable
shooting events that gun clubs all over the United States arrange for their
adult and junior members. Trophies and medals don’t have to be up for grabs for those involved to have fun. If you
have a place to shoot, getting club members and local juniors together to learn
safety and do some shooting followed by BBQ hot off the grill is a great way to spend the day.
Tell us about events your club runs. The CMP would like to post your
activity reports in The First Shot On-Line too! |
