OKC Rolls Out the Red Carpet for CMP at Oklahoma Games

ARCADIA, OKLAHOMA – The membership of the Oklahoma City Gun Club opened its arms, ranges and barbecue grill to the staff of the Civilian Marksmanship Program at the introductory CMP Oklahoma Games, 12-15 April. The event was held at the club, just northeast of Oklahoma City near Arcadia.

CMP Board Vice Chairman Cris Stone congratulates Don Rutherford upon winning the Vintage Military Rifle Match. Rutherford also won the John C. Garand Match, the overall three-gun aggregate and was a partner on the Vintage Sniper Rifle Team Match with Shane Adamson.

“Our friends in Oklahoma certainly know how to put on a shooting event,” said Christie Sewell, General Manager of CMP Programs. “We felt very welcome by the folks at the Oklahoma City Gun Club and they made our games event a great experience,” she said.

In addition to its standard rifle events, CMP conducted a 40-shot pistol match, an as-issued pistol match, a National Match Course pistol match and a team pistol match. The rifle events included most of CMP’s traditional long-gun matches, however; a service rifle match took the place of the rimfire sporter match.

Allen and Rachael Lansdown, of Tulsa, OK, made the Oklahoma Games their first CMP event. Rachael, a shooter, came to the matches in support of Allen who competed in the EIC Service Rifle and Garand Match.

Kent Shomber, 52, of Edmond, OK, won the EIC Service Rifle match with an aggregate score of 482-15X. Danny Arnold, 46, of Norman, OK, placed second with a 479-8X and Harold Mauck, 58, of Hutchinson, KS, finished third with 475-11X. Mauck led all non-distinguished shooters in the leg points chase as Shomber and Arnold have already earned their Distinguished Rifle badges.

Duncan, the Lansdown’s four-legged supporter, kept tabs on the shooting from the ready line.

Harry Hannah, 31, of Norman, OK, and Mike Sexton, 53, of Tulsa, OK, were deadlocked at 470-9X, but Hannah won on the National Match Course tiebreaker based on his higher longest-distance (600 yards) score of 192-4X compared to Sexton’s 186-4X. The National Match course consists of 10 shots - Standing Slow/200 Yards, 10 shots - Sitting or Kneeling Rapid/200 Yards, 10 shots - Prone Rapid/300 Yards and 20 shots - Prone Slow/600 Yards.

Glendale “Don” Rutherford, 60, of Tallapoosa, GA, won the John C. Garand Match with an aggregate score of 287-9X, firing a pair of 99’s in slow and rapid prone and an 89 in offhand. Timothy “Shane” Adamson, 39, of Hueytown, Alabama, placed second with 279-7X in an X-ring tiebreaker over Larry Stonecipher, 59, of Ada, OK, who placed third with a 279-1X. Rutherford was the high senior and Aaron Van Hyning, 18, of Snoqualmie, WA, was the high junior in the match.

Stonecipher won the Springfield Match with a seven-point advantage over Rutherford with a 289-7X and was the high senior. He fired 99, 95 and 94 in prone slow, rapid and offhand, respectively. Rutherford followed with a tiebreaker win over Kent Shomber, who each finished the match with 281-3X. Rutherford’s 89 in offhand to Shomber’s 88 was the difference.

Rutherford jumped back to the top of the podium in the Vintage Military Rifle Match, firing a 283-5X with his M96 Swedish Mauser, topping Harold Pate, 50, of Ft. Worth, TX, who fired a 280-5X, using his Swiss K31. Third place went to Shane Adamson who fired a 278-3X with his K31. Rutherford was also the high senior.

Charles Abston won the As-Issued Pistol Match and the Overall EIC Pistol Match and was a member of the winning team event. His wife Denise joined him in support.

By winning two out of three of the Garand-Springfield-Military (GSM) matches in overall scoring, Rutherford claimed the Three-Gun GSM Aggregate award with an 851-17X total. Stonecipher placed second (834-13X) and Pate placed third with 826-11X.

Dry, 38, of Ada, OK, and McGregor, 43, of Jackson, MS, each won four introductory points toward their Distinguished badge. Glenn Ward, 60, of Bellevue, NE, (361-4X) placed third among non-Distinguished competitors in the match and also won his first four leg points, as did Gere Goodenberger, 48, of Claremore, OK. The top 10 percent (four of 41) of non-Distinguished shooters in this match were eligible for EIC points.

Dick Whiting served as Chief Range Officer throughout the CMP Oklahoma Games. He was joined by his wife Louise.

Don Rutherford and Shane Adamson (Shane & Don) teamed up to win the CMP Oklahoma Games Vintage Sniper Rifle Team Match, fired at 300 and 600 yards, with a team aggregate of 387-7X. Rutherford fired 97-1X and 98-4X at 300 and 600 and Adamson followed with 95-2X and 97-0X, respectively.

Team Passed Gas, comprised of Steven Neilson, 53, of Nash, OK, and Kent Shomber, fired a team score of 375-15X for second place. Gravel Bellies Silver, made up of Steven Brubaker, 53, of Saint Robert, MO, and Marc Mustafa, 58, of Littleton, CO, placed third with a team total of 370-5X.

The Van Hyning family brought three generations of shooters to the CMP Oklahoma Games from Washington and California. From left are Robert, Jake, Aaron, Ken and Don. Aaron was the high junior in the Garand Match.

The high individual scores in the match were Rutherford (195-5X), Gere Goodenberger (192-6X) and Shane Adamson (192-2X). A total of 23 teams competed in the sniper team match.

In Unlimited Garand, Walker Rowell, 66, of Bixby, OK, fired a 283-7X and 278-4X (re-entry) and Harry Eppreson, 62, of El Reno, OK, fired a 253-1X.

In pistol competition, Ronald Doggett, 51, of Oklahoma City, OK, won the 40-Shot Pistol Match with an aggregate score of 353-6X. Doggett was followed by Charles Abston, 71, of Jones, OK, with a 347-8X and Daniel Cleaver, 74, of Oklahoma City, who placed third with an overall score of 325-5X. The match, consisting of 20 shots slow-fire, 10 shots timed-fire and 10 shots rapid-fire, was completed by 18 shooters.

Gere Goodenberger has attended the National Matches at Camp Perry since 2002 and said he was excited to attend a CMP event in his home state. He was also the recipient of flying mud in the pits!.

Abston won the As-Issued Pistol Match with an aggregate score of 263-4X. The match included three 10-shot strings of slow, timed and rapid fire. Doggett finished second with 252-2X and Silas Fentress, 62, of Oklahoma City, took third place with a score of 236-2X.

The National Match Course EIC pistol competition was led overall by Abston, with a 266-7X, who is already a Distinguished Pistol Shot. Doggett, who is also Distinguished, placed second overall with a 265-6X.

Richard Wise, 55, of Yukon, OK, was the high EIC non-Distinguished pistol competitor, who finished third overall and first among those without leg points, with a score of 248-4X. Brad Wells, 38, of Meeker, OK, placed second among eligible shooters with a total score of 245-4X and William Dittenhofer, 57, of Manitou Springs, CO, placed third with a 241-3X.

In team competition, Oklahoma Pistol Team Red placed first with a four-person total aggregate score of 1049-14X. The team was comprised of Doggett, Abston, Wise and Charles Meloy, 74, of Noble, OK.

Oklahoma Pistol Team Blue placed second with an aggregate of 928-6X. Team members are Jack Oak, Brad Wells, Robert Wyatt and John Milligan. The Red Dirt Rangers, comprised by Dittenhofer, Mark Thomas, Kirby Cordell and Travis Jacobs fired an aggregate score of 533-2X.
