In Memoriam-Colonel Jack Rollinger, USA (Ret.). A former Director of Civilian Marksmanship, COL Rollinger passed away on 9 January 2003 and was laid to rest at Arlington National Cemetery on 7 February 2003. He was one of the longest-tenured DCM's, serving from the late 1970s through the mid-1980s. COL Rollinger's leadership of the Army DCM office and National Board for the Promotion of Rifle Practice occurred during a period when annual appropriations for marksmanship were often challenged in the U.S. Congress. It is a testimony to his effective and enthusiastic leadership that the Civilian Marksmanship Program not only survived, but that its activities and impact, especially on junior shooting, grew significantly. COL Rollinger played a pivotal role in saving thousands of M1s from destruction and was the key leader in developing the CMP's National Matches Junior Support Program that continues to bring many junior service rifle shooters to the National Trophy Rifle Matches. In Memoriam--Col. Ken Erdman, USMCR (Ret). A great highpower service rifle shooter and an outstanding leader in the highpower rifle shooting community, passed away on 24 October 2002. He was laid to rest at Arlington National Cemetery on 27 November. Col. Erdman won the President's Rifle Match in 1982 with what was then a national record score. He won the NRA National Service Rifle Championship in 1982 and 1983 and numerous other National Matches trophies and awards. He was a Distinguished Rifleman and member of the President's 100. He served as the OIC of the USMCR Rifle Team from 1976 through 1985. In recent years, Col. Erdman served on the National Matches highpower championships administrative staff. In addition to his distinguished career as a Marine Reservist, Col. Erdman worked for the Federal Aviation Administration and became the Chief Test Pilot for the FAA's Los Angeles Aircraft Certification Office. In Memoriam-John K. Beasley. One of the most active and influential volunteer shooting competition officials in the U. S. during the 1980s and 1990s passed away on 2 February. Memorial services for John Beasley were held in Hockessin, Delaware on 6 February 2003. Mr. Beasley was the father of Marsha Beasley, a member of the CMP Board of Directors. He served as the chief of the smallbore rifle national championship at Camp Perry and was a competition official in the 1984 Olympic Games, 1987 Pan American Games, 1996 Olympic Games and several ISSF World Cups. He was a Chief Range Officer in the 1996 Olympic Games and developed training curriculum that continues to be used to train international competition officials. John Beasley was a recipient of the ISSF Gold Medal for outstanding and long-term service to shooting. His 20 plus years of volunteer service as a competition official is an outstanding example of the selfless work that competition officials do to assure that competitive shooters have quality competitions. In January, when reporting about a bill giving 2,880 acres of federal land, valued at $230 million, to Clark County, Nevada, to construct the largest multi-purpose public shooting range in America, CMP News mistakenly stated that the Ben Avery Shooting Range in Arizona, the largest publicly operated range in America, had closed its gates and was no longer operating. We are happy to correct that mistake and emphasize that the Ben Avery facility is indeed open for citizens to enjoy. The Ben Avery Range offers facilities for nearly every shooting discipline and is in fact in the process of expanding their facilities. The Ben Avery Range is operated by the Arizona Game and Fish Department. Information about the facility can be found at www.basfaz.com or through www.azgfd.com. Host Clubs For 2003 Rimfire Sporter Matches Sought. The CMP inaugurated an exciting new recreation-oriented target game in 2002 when CMP Rimfire Sporter Rifle Matches were conducted at Camp Perry, during the National Matches, and at Wolf Creek in Atlanta. The Rimfire Sporter Match has been called the "Garand Match of rimfire shooting." In 2003, the CMP plans to expand the number of national-level Rimfire Sporter Rifle Matches by conducting up to five "CMP Centennial Series Rimfire Sporter Matches" at host clubs throughout the country. Hosts have been identified in the southeast U. S., but hosts in other parts of the country are still being sought. To host one of these matches, clubs must have a minimum of 40 covered 50-yard firing points and be willing to provide five or six volunteers to assist with the competition. The CMP will provide the Match Director to conduct a clinic and the competition, as well as the targets, achievement medals and participant's T-shirts. Any club that is interested in hosting a CMP Centennial Series Rimfire Sporter Rifle Match should contact Christie Sewell, 419-635-2141, ext. 1112 or competitions@odcmp.com. The reward for participating clubs will be having an opportunity to give recreation-oriented shooters in your area a new competition and to assist in developing this exciting form of competitive shooting. CMP Sanctioned Matches. In addition to these Centennial Series Rimfire Matches, any affiliated club can now conduct its own Rimfire Sporter Match that is sanctioned by the CMP. In 2003, the CMP will sanction Club Garand Matches, Springfield Matches, Vintage Military Rifle Matches and Rimfire Sporter Matches. The CMP match sanctioning program will feature several changes that will go into effect in 2003. There will be a basic $20 match-sanctioning fee for CMP-Sanctioned Garand, Springfield, Vintage Military Rifle and Rimfire Sporter Matches. Match sponsors will be able to purchase special award pins that they can present at their matches to recognize the same achievement levels that are rewarded with medallions at the National Garand, Springfield and Rimfire Sporter Matches. For more information on CMP sanctioned matches, contact Christie Sewell. National Match Trophy to be Commissioned in Honor of Carlos Hathcock. A new national trophy is to be commissioned in memory of legendary Marine Gunnery Sergeant Carlos Hathcock II in honor of his dedicated service and outstanding skill as a marksman. The new trophy will be placed on permanent display at the Civilian Marksmanship Program Headquarters as part of the National Trophy Collection at Camp Perry and will be awarded annually to the Marine shooter in the National Trophy Rifle Matches who fires the highest combined score in the President's Rifle Match, the National Trophy Individual Match and the National Trophy Team Match. The trophy will depict Gunny Hathcock with an M1 rifle. A committee has been established to oversee the trophy project and raise the funds to create the trophy. The Civilian Marksmanship Program Board of Directors has approved the trophy proposal and looks forward to placing it in competition at the 2003 National Matches.
